      I'm getting all my friends and family to gather 'em for me. A couple of friends have brought me gallon / 4L jars of caps this summer, and they are endlessly fascinated that the "waste" product they brought me last summer helped me serve them a salad with supper this summer.

      In Canada we're metric system as well, but I was born before the switch over so I use a blend of the two systems. As well, I know many of the USA visitors can have troubles with the conversion so I try to talk in both. It makes it easier for everyone and doesn't cost me a lot :)

      Oh you are very welcome. Yeah I went through some tough times and my video content creation just got taken out of the priority list. Things are better and I'm wanting to get back to this. The header tank idea is something I got from a community video early on, but everyone was crowing about bell siphons so I never investigated it.

    A large miner will always mine more than a small one regardless of how much is in the pool because the large one has higher efficiency (90% vs 70% base). It also won't need calibration as often. Also, turn on auto mode for your harvest tool with middle mouse button.

      More detailed video coming soon on the full system integration. However, the short version is that it's tricky and only marginally worth it in North America where electricity and transport is cheap. On the other hand, if electricity is pricey or grid / transportation access is awkward, then the Trompe begins to make a lot of sense.

      @@MichelVaillancourt Can i ask why you'd aerate the water then essentially de-aerate it in the trompe to then add the air back in with a bubbler rather than just using the aerated water that traps the air originally? Is there an efficiency/better aeration achieved with the bubbler?

    Hey Mich, I might have missed it but is the fill and drain in the same pipe in the grow beds? can you go over that part in detail or point me in the right direction? Cheers! Keep up the good work!

    • @MichelVaillancourt
      @MichelVaillancourt 3 роки тому

      I'll make a point of showing that in more detail in the next video; thanks for the request. That said, you are right flood and drain is being done by the same pipe. The pump is 900gph or so; at gravity (0 PSI), 2"/50mm SCH40 will carry 2200gph. So I'm only using ½ the capacity of the pipe. When the siphon starts to run, it's generating a couple PSI of pressure. Every PSI is about 55GPH of flow. That means that the siphon is able to out run the pump and the water being dragged out of the grow-beds. A chain of several grow-beds can be managed this way, so long as they are all level to each other and the time it takes to drain them doesn't start crawling past the 10 minute mark. You want those beds to cycle at least 4 times an hour to keep the root zone wet and nutrient rich, as well as providing plenty of food for your beneficial bacteria. Cheers! Let me know if you have any other questions.

      the only "catch" I find is keeping the lid on the roaster pan. I've had a couple of loads of ash, because wood out side shifted, jarred the lid, and that allowed air inside. I'm likely going to rivet some steel into a "shoe box" that will be easier to keep the lid down on. good luck with your tries!

    Nice work. Ive seen nft systems like that with staggered holes. Just an idea for the next tube you get. If each plant leans a bit you can get more per tube. Also i have 24 rainbows and its running 300+ plants. Still small, but i have many a nitrates. You could grow so much more. No pressure. I know everything costs money.

    • @MichelVaillancourt

      Thanks for the suggestions, Nickaa121212. The biggest problem is that the pipes are too close together. Next year I'll need to nearly double the gap between them. Everything is just too crowded. I'm going to add some Dutch Buckets and a raft trough next year to use up all the available nutrients. The pipes are kind of cool, but I'm finding other problems with them.

      Hi there! Thanks for stopping in and messaging! First, I've got a blog series (long, but lots) that talks about what I learned with the system. You can find it at bit.ly/rocketmassheater Second, the system ate itself after 2/3 of the season. I did not know the difference between "splits" and full fire bricks. I was able to get the temps in the burn tunnel and riser over 1000F and 2000F, respectively, and shattered the splits I built the system with. That spring, we had a heap of rats move in, and because I was unable to run the RMH, they used the heat trench as a nuclear bomb shelter. So, the entire system has been disassembled, and I'm going to be rebuilding it this fall and winter as a pebble-fill above-ground box build.

    Almost skipped watching this video when I saw it was 50 mins long but I'm very glad I stayed up from 4am to 5am in the morning before I headed on down to the hardware store to just buy a bunch of assorted pipes I think I might need. You really made a good point that the size of the pipes maters lots when designing a system. I must sleep now, lol, but when I awake I'll attempt to do some 'rough' maths and make sure I get the right pipes/pump size I need for my custom system I'm building.

    • @MichelVaillancourt

      +Chris Klugh - Thanks for stopping by, Chris, and thanks for the kind words. I really appreciate hearing from folks who find my videos useful. Let me know how your build goes, particularly if you wind up using a loop-style like I'm showing here. All the best with your own build, either way!

    • @chrisklugh
      @chrisklugh 7 років тому

      I'll more then likely be going loop-style. I'm building a shelf system and trying to get the most efficiency out of the space I have. Got a 110L FT, 58L ST, and 2 50L GB. Could not find 1 GB with the dimensions I wanted so I had to go with 2. I do not want 2 bell siphons as that would take up a lot of space so I want a loop style that fits outside the GB that will also act as level equalizer for the 2 tanks so they will fill and drain at the same time. So I recon the 2 GB will be joined together with a T joint and in the middle will be the bottom of my siphon assembly. So with that said, what do you think about the root issues? I'm still not sure how to build a root guard. If I'm putting holes into the bottom, how much space would I really need to 'cup' over the mouth for it to work trouble free you think? Should I build it vertical up the side of both GBs? Or should I build it horizontally along the bottom of the GBs?

    Do you really need a siphon for your over flow from your fish tank to your sump tank?If you replaced the 90 degree elbow with an open ended T fitting the water would flow freely.

    • @MichelVaillancourt
      @MichelVaillancourt 7 років тому

      Hi, +Greg M.! Thanks for your question. No, I don't need a siphon there. In fact, It's just there for the video as a demo unit. Normally, that is just a gravity-fed over-flow, as you suggest. However, with the fish tank right there, and the sump to dump into, it makes a great "testing rig" for proofing siphon designs. As well, it is right beside the double-doors of the greenhouse, which makes it easy to set the camera up and see what I'm doing. Thanks for stopping by and joining the conversation!

    you will need to create a low pressure differential to initiate a siphon. because the low pressure cannot build due to the water seal when your lower bed is above the outlet. if your upper bead was higher basically 2in above the lower bed max water height and the outlet was just above the waterline as well it would cycle.
